Self Care For Mental Health Workers, Peer Support Specialists, IHSS Workers, Social Workers, Therapists & Healing Practitioners

Self Care For Mental Health Workers, Peer Support Specialists, IHSS Workers, Social Workers, Therapists & Healing Practitioners is your Number #1 Top Priority.

Be dedicated to it.

It will save your life and many others as well.

You're no good to anyone when you are burnt-out.

Wellness is a lot about prevention and delayed rewards, so it's extra important to create a daily wellness plan to have to keep at it.

Your health is important

Your mental health is important.

Your ability to speak and teach and mentor about recovery and wellness from your own experience is important.

You are a role model in helping others, so practice what you preach and you'll feel better and your clients will take notice too. Win-Win.

There are countless benefits to self-care, including the awesome accumulated effect is has on one's life. The more you do it and the longer you practice it, the better everything gets.

There's been a lot of new brain science out in the last couple years that shows self-care activities are healing the brain and stimulating the brain to heal you!  How awesome is that! It's like giving yourself a ton of healthy anti-depressants and anti-anxiety boosts rolled into one.

People usually come up with all the excuses and reasons why they can't keep at it or they're too busy or they'll forget. So here are some tips to make is super easy and fun to do that you look forward to.

First of all, only pick a few activities for your first daily routine. Even just one activity for 5 minutes is better than zero. So the first tip is make it EASY.

People like easy. If it feels easy, then you're more likely to do it. So this is not "goal setting" and this is not a "list of things to do", this is a wellness routine you can live with.

Second to easy is it has to be FUN!  People love to do things they find fun. So think of a few ideas of what you enjoy, what makes you happy and find some (or just one) fun activities that you could add into your daily routine.

Third, there's no way out of it so you might as well embrace it and find your favorite way to exercise.  There has to be some form of MOVEMENT in your daily routine. Even if it is to get up out of your chair more often. Sitting is the new smoking. If you must sit or lay down most of your day for whatever reason, get up an extra time each day and make that your movement daily routine for awhile.  You can always increase it later to getting up every 2 hours for a short walk around the house or office.

I know many of us collapse at night and on weekends. We give all we got to others who are so needy and need our help that we are spent and hit the bed face first and lay there for an hour before getting up the energy to eat. Or we lay on the couch and binge-watch our favorite shows and barely open the curtains.

Mental and physical exhaustion is real and it only gets worse over time so even though you may feel too tired to move, the more you move, the more energy you will have. "Motion is lotion", moving nourishes all your joints and blood and oxygen flow etc. etc.

If you're at this low point, then move more by doing some arm stretches or leg lifts during the commercials.

If you're not that far gone, then add in a daily walk or 15 minuets of yoga poses or anything you find easy and fun to do.  I started off with doing Qigong (self taught with YouTube vidoes) at home and it did wonders for my achy, stiff, exhausted body.

All you need to do is INCREASE your movement each day to accomplish this daily routine. Take more stairs, park father away in the parking lot at the store. Walk around, stretch, dance, yogo, Ti Chi, bouncing on an exercise ball, riding your bike, swimming, practice martial arts moves. Come up with your own routine. But so something physical each day and watch your mood improve and your body thank you with feeling stronger, more energetic and less aches and pains.

Fourth - SOCIAL SUPPORT - any social support will do; one on one with friends, chatting in an online group, face to face support groups, mentors, sponsors, hotlines, warm lines. As long as you are social with one human being per day and that you increase your options of social support from people who have something in common with you - you are fulfilling your social support need. Even journal writing or self-help book reading can be a form of social support, but try to do every other day with a real human being. We need touch, we need the personal energy of being with people, and we're social being with a real need to engage and connect.

If nothing else, say hello to everyone you pass by or every clerk at the store, etc. Don't go inside forever even if you are the world's most introverted person, we still need each other. Weed out the assholes that give us good people a bad name, and look for like-minded future friends who are cool.

Fifth - have at least one GOAL you are working on in your life and each day take a tiny or large step toward it. Part of your daily routine should include taking at least 1 action that is moving you closer to accomplishing something that you really want. Decide what that one thing is and write down some actions you need to take to get there, and each day try to accomplish a baby step in that direction. Even if you spend time brainstorming your goal, that counts. So focus on your desires, wishes, dreams and goals, pick a few you can work towards over time and each day take one.

You'll feel a sense of pride and accomplishment and eventually you will have the reward of the goal complete and you'll be excited to set new goals to work toward. Don't over-do it, pick 1-3, maybe 5 top goals for the year and find every day actions that you can easily do toward them. Drop them if you have to and just stick to one at a time. Be nice to yourself, don't overwhelm yourself with workaholic frenzy and then beat yourself up for not being superwoman. No one can. One of my first goals was to learn Qigong. There were 18 moves I had to learn and memorize, so I got my movement and my goal action done at the same time. That's not cheating to combine goals. It's actually a very smart thing to set goals around your daily routine.

It's the daily routine over time that will save your ass in the long run anyway.

Sixth: PERSONAL PLEASURE!

Each day treat yourself to something pleasurable that you enjoy or is relaxing, refreshing or just plain feels good.  This could be anything because everyone is different. It could be losing yourself in a book or an art project, it could be enjoying your favorite songs, it could be a bubble bath, it could be fixing your favorite meal, taking a joy ride in the car exploring a new part of your town, it could be a hobby or a pet, or playing games or watching comedy shows. Anything that feels good, makes you feel good and that you're glad you did it when you look back on it later.

Seventh Tip is: REWARD yourself!  Give yourself rewards and treats for getting things done and for doing your routine. You can even "trick" yourself into doing your routine by making it mandatory for you to get an activity done before you can "reward" yourself with going back to sitting around doing nothing all day. If you're so tired you just need rest, then make yourself get something done first. For example, I use to run out of something on purpose and then have to walk to the corner store to go get it and then I'd say hello to the store clerk and walk back with my item. Then I'd crash on the couch and watch my favorite movies. After a few hours, I made myself stretch and do leg lifts on the commercials.  I'd put on my favorite music and before you knew it I had the urge to get up and dance a few minuets.  The secret to rewards is it gives you an incentive to get something done you might otherwise ignore.

Keep in mind you might not feel like doing any of these things - the whole point of a daily routine you plan in advance and try to accomplish each day (no one is perfect, so don't worry if you don't get it all done every day, instead strive to get what you can done).  The point is having a routine you can get back to or start over again each day.  If you have it planned and you already know there's a benefit in it for you later, then its easier to just do it as a homework assignment rather than wait until you "feel like it" to get it done.

Remember, the more you do, the better you feel. Not the other way around... so sometimes you have to force yourself to jump-start the doing and then you feel better later.

Self-Care and Wellness are things we do to prevent future break-downs. So have a think and brainstorm your daily wellness self-care routine and then get one thing done TODAY!!

Here's an Example of one of my first WELLNESS ROUTINES:

G - Goal:  Learn 18 Qigong moves
R - Reward: Reward myself by watching my favorite shows
A - Action: Practice a Qigong move and try to do without watching video
P - Pleasure: Enjoy chocolate, cafe moca or lose self in coloring
E - Exercise: Practice a Qigong move and try to memorize it
S - Social: Say hello to everyone I come across.

Now, this might not seem like much, and it may seem like the over-lap in activities is "cheating", but hey, it got me going. It got me doing. It got me used to a daily routine of self-care and wellness.

A year after this I was riding my bike almost every day and my goal was to go a little farther each day. I had built up to about 5 miles!  And then I learned tennis!  One does not just go from the couch depressed to playing tennis..am I right? But look where that little Qigong move got me over time.

Another time my goal was to read a long book and so each day I read a page.

I set little fun goals and big challenging goals and tried to mix it up so I wouldn't get bored. I made it fun and easy and gave myself a reward. The best news is that after a few years I was feeling the best I had felt in years and feeling younger and more alive and energetic and that made me a much better mental health counselor.

It's tough work helping people. It may take a couple years to learn the balance of helping others without it affecting you or making you exhausted. But its rewarding and fulfilling work and forces us to take self-care seriously which in the end is a gift in itself.

When you give yourself things to do you create an experience. THAT experience is causing your brain to trigger all the good neurotransmitters to help you feel better and heal your tired old brain and body. Doing may be fun, but its the after-glow affect that you savor and allow in that heals you on the inside. The more self-care experiences you have, the better you feel and the harder it is to relapse into bad feelings.

Remember, with depression, stress, exhaustion, you are feeling worse and doing less and its a downward spiral. When you create a wellness self-care routine you are doing more and feeling better. You are in effect, arresting the downward spiral and creating momentum for the upward spiral and it's accumulated effects that turn into self-rewarding loops.

Try it and see for yourself.

P.S. (Tell the inner critic to shut up and don't let it stop you from taking good care of yourself and giving yourself nurturing love, pleasure and attention.  You can even play creative games with your inner critic and say, "I suck at dancing? Ok, lets see (dance for a few minutes), "there, did that suck?", ok, whatever, thanks for sharing, but I still got my exercise in so the joke's on you inner critic, ha ha ha, I didn't do it good enough but at least I did it!  And it felt GOOD!)

EFT Tapping Booklets and Video Links |Emotional Healing for Wellness and Recovery

To learn EFT Tapping and NLP Ninja is one thing; to practice it daily is another.

To help with that daily practice of emotional healing on the recovery journey, I put together some cheat sheets and made up some booklets, got them scanned in and now ready to upload here for you to be able to click the link below and download them or print them for yourself.

I'm also making a video to explain it just in case there are newbies and to add some tips for those already experienced and now want to keep going with recovery tapping.

It saved my life, it changed my life, for the better, and then later it transformed my life into much better.  It's what I teach my clients and what I want available on my blog because there are millions of suffering victims and survivors who need all the help they can get. This is what I wish I had 20 or 30 years ago.  I feel I learned it so I could eventually teach it to others and that has come true.

How to find a good (loving, kind) man (for once) for complex-trauma (toxic family) survivors who are tired of the selfish ones

How to find a good (loving, kind) man (for once) for complex-trauma (toxic family) survivors who are tired of the selfish ones.

From the time I can remember first dating, I was always dating guys who were dysfunctional, or drug addicts, or cheaters, or worse.

As time went on, despite the fact that I wanted a family, my “man-compass” and my “man-picker” was completely skewed.

It just got worse over time. As an adult in my 30’s I wasted a lot of time in relationships that left me feeling drained and exhausted.

They cheated, they used me, they blew my money, they partied and they didn’t work much.

One was abusive and one was stalker-like and one was just plain crazy.

By the time I was hitting my 40’s I was so DONE.

I really WANTED change, but I had no idea how to change or what to change. I didn’t know what I was doing to attract these guys, so I had no idea what to do to attract anything different.

Luckily, I had begun my recovery journey work on myself which led me to using EFT Tapping on all my upsets and issues and it became clear to me that it was now time to start Tapping on my relationship issues.

After a year of doing just that, I took my personal program of Tapping on Codependency and wrote a book called, “Emotional Freedom Techniques for Codependency Recovery”.

But I did something else too….

I did an extensive RELATIONSHIP HISTORY so I could find my patterns.

I really had no idea the wealth of information that would come out of a Relationship History until I did one.  I knew in a vague, general way that I had some sort of dysfunctional relationship pattern, but I was completely stumped on what they meant.

The Relationship History really showed me in black and white my patterns, my beliefs, and the red flags I should be paying more attention to.

I also learned 3 important things about myself that I really wasn’t aware of:

  1. I had a belief deep down that good guys wouldn’t like me
  2. I didn’t think I “deserved” a good guy despite the fact I had worked hard on myself to become not only a good person, but an educated, employed one who helped others.
  3. I thought only ‘bad boys’ would put up with my shortcomings.

Once I saw these beliefs and came to terms with them (accepted them), it was time to TAP on these beliefs so I could clear and replace them with updated, healthier, more accurate beliefs.

A self-inventory also helped me.

I wrote down all my good characteristics. All of my strengths. All of my accomplishments. And, I wrote down all of the comments I heard from my friends and co-workers who liked me.

This was the foundation of my positive self-beliefs and EFT TAPPING was the method I used to clear the negative beliefs and program in my positive beliefs.

I was becoming more of the real me by doing this.

I was clearing away my past issues by doing this.

I was getting ready to date again, in a new way, with self-esteem and belief that I deserved and was worth a good man.

But I was not able to do that without a Relationship History so I would know what to watch out for.

I also had to do one more thing to get ready to date in a new way.

I needed to know what I really wanted in a man/relationship. So I wrote down a few lists I got out of a dating book:

  1. List what I want in a man/relationship
  2. List of things I never wanted to put up with again
  3. List of negotiables, things I could work with because no one is perfect

Then I dated without straying from my lists.

My lists were like laws, if someone had any traits or behaviors from List 2, then they were out of my dating pool. No “if’s”, “and's” or “but’s”. They were refused any further dates and I moved on to the next date.

One reason why it's important to date several people at once over time is that you see you have options and it makes it easier to say “no” or “sorry, I’m not interested” to the ones who did not meet my List 1 traits.

So. to sum up, over a course of about 15 years, I had 3 serious relationships. All ended in 2 years or less. All ended with them cheating or being abusive. Two were ones where I literally had to move away to get away from. One gave me 6 stitches in my lip..

All of them left me with a mess to clean up, drained and exhausted.

I’d spend months and months alone in between trying to work on myself and get my life together.

But eventually I got lonely and desperate and would fall for the next (bad) one.

Like I said, after 15 years of this, I decided to try something different, so I did what I explained above.  Then I dated.

I can’t teach you how to date. But there are plenty of good dating books out there with awesome tips. I know, I read at least 3 of them and came up with what worked for me.

But none of it would be possible without that Relationship History.

I decided to create a sample Relationship History Chart for you to fill out so you can start to flesh out your patterns and red flags too.

I think it would have been impossible for me to change my deeply-ingrained beliefs if it were not for EFT Tapping to help me clear them up, fast.

So, here is how to find a good, loving, kind man for once if you are recovering from complex trauma or toxic family patterns and are sick and tired of the selfish, abusive ones:

  1. TAP on your issues and upsets so you have control over how you react and deal.
  2. Write a list of what you really want. (TAP on all negative self-talk that comes up when you look at what you want).
  3. Do a Relationship History.
  4. Do a self-inventory of your positive traits you have to offer.
  5. Write up your 3 Lists for dating.
  6. Date.

That’s it in a nutshell.

I did and 9 months of fun, happy dating later, I met my soulmate. We have been together for 8 years now. It’s never been abusive. We are both completely loyal. We both go to work every day and we are always there for each other. He’s my best friend and I really think he saved my life in more ways than one.

We’ve had our share of fights and it's not perfect, but we’re not perfect beings. Dealing with relationship issues is another story. Relationships, no matter how good, tend to bring up our own issues that still need work. So if you continue to catch these and work on yourself, and there is real love, then you’ll do alright.

10 Fears Every Codependent Needs To Know, And the EFT Tapping To Fix Them

10 Fears Every Codependent Needs To Know, And the EFT Tapping Tips To Fix Them

During a session with a woman struggling with an abusive husband, she asked me, "As far as that acupressure thing you do, do you rub the points and manipulate them to work better, or what?"

I said, "No. Actually, you use your fingers to Tap on each acupuncture point. ….Like tapping on a window to get someone's attention…"

".....But the trick is to have in mind what you are upset about while you Tap so you can tell if it worked or not".

"Do you have any issues you want to try Tapping on?

She says she's been trying to lose weight. But she ate donuts for breakfast this morning and was still feeling guilty about it.

So I said, "First, let's Tap on the feelings of guilt so you see how this works, and then we'll go from there.

"OK", she said.

So, first we Tapped on Guilt.  I asked her on a SUDs scale of 1 to 10 how much guilt she had - and she said it was a "9".

We did 1 full-round and got it down to a "7", and then did a short-cut and got down to a "3".

 She felt "over it".

Just to make sure, I said, "Think back to this morning, you should be ashamed of yourself for eating all those donuts".

She was calm, "Yeah, but it doesn't bother me anymore".

Perfect. This is how I like to see my clients "get it"; by experience.

She said now that the guilt was gone she did have this other issue in her head.

I asked her, "How does that issue make you feel?"

She answered, "Irritated and angry!"  She went on to tell the story…

"I gave him a ride to the airport for a business trip where he'd be gone for over 2 weeks. We were stuck there waiting for 4 hours. And, instead of spending those last few hours with me, he was on his phone the whole time with his friends, some of them female, thanking them for all their support. But I was the one all along helping him get this job, and I was the one who drove for hours and did everything to get him ready, but I had to just sit there doing nothing."

I asked, "On a scale of 1 to 10, irritated and angry you are"?

She said, "9".

So we Tapped on anger.  She went from a "9" down to a "5" and then down to a "3".

During those rounds, I taught her "Freestyle Tapping", where you Tap on each point and say whatever comes to mind, and really get into it.

She even laughed a little during the Freestyle Tapping. There's something funny about 2 women Tapping on themselves while saying, "..that mother-****  ass &%^&*"  "I'm so (*&*) pissed right now"!!  It's a huge relief to get that all out.

We discussed what fears were behind her guilt and we came up with:

10 Fears Codependents In Abusive Relationships Have To TAP On:

- Fear of feeling worthless
- Fear of feeling abandoned, unwanted
- Fear of being a failure or at fault
- Fear of leaving ex-asshole and then he changes for the better and finds someone else
- Fear of staying with ex and being strung along for another 5 years.
- Fear she is wrong
- Fear she did something wrong
- Fear it was all her fault, fear she failed at fixing it or being good enough
- Fear she would breakdown or have an uncontrollable outburst and embarrass herself
- Fear of being socially ridiculed/looked down on, for such a huge mistake in judgment.

Know that there are thousands of women going through the same thing right now, tapping on their issues, on their way of renewing their (love) life.  I know one more, and I have a feeling she is going to be feeling and doing a lot better by the next time I see her.

Welcome to Recovery Tapping - Tap Out of Fear and Into Choices -

Yeah, so I got my weekly Depression Wellness Recovery Art Class started up and going.

I've had a few people show up, a few regulars and one drop-in.

Plus I've been spreading the word to people every day so I expect a steady growth in members.

Anywhoo.  it worked out well to start with the Symptoms of Depression first, and then put them into 1 of 3 categories (body, mind, emotion), which serves to justify the use of daily GRAPES.

Then we jump into GRAPES with the handouts I already described last blog post, and then go into negative thinking and reframing negative, critical, depressed thinking into wellness affirmations.

Along with that we put in coloring or doodle pages in-between and just also decided to add a doodle border to each worksheet moving forward.

I got the bones of it, but the members of the class also help create this thing by adding in their two cents as we go and their feedback on what I've put together as well.

Everyone leave happy. They smile more. They are glad they came. They got their social support goal met for the week and they like it.

This gives me great personal pleasure and satisfaction.

Now.., how do I bring my 3 recovery binders full of energy psychology and recovery with positive psychology "stuff" into the picture?

Answer: I don't know, just one step at a time.

It's ok if one step at a time feels like a slow crawl.

Like I'm behind and gotta catch up and get all this stuff out there...

But I have to be in the moment today and go with the crawl.

Embrace the crawl.

I've learned to just embrace all the shit that happens, because shit it suppose to happen.

Embrace it, feel it, mindfulness it, and clear it up in time too.

And that's what the next part of the class is all about:  how to deal with the shit that happens.

That's where EFT Tapping come in. We will learn EFT in 5 Easy Steps and start applying that to our negative thinking and feeling and get some movement there.

And also, this is where MINDFULNESS come in too. We will practice it together in several ways, not just the healing way.  We will mindfully color and doodle without realizing it half the time. We will learn SOMATIC MINDFULNESS so we will get used to going within and feeling somatic markers and beyond for those interested, into communicating with them.

Then there is the whole Energy Moves thing, from Donna Eden and some basic Qi Gong moves to teach the class so they can get their ENERGY EXERCISE in their day. To get their Energy up and activated the lazy man's way - by sitting there in your chair and doing Energy Tapping and Energy Moves and FEEL BETTER

Of course from there we will move into physical exercise brainstorming of what each one likes to do ad aim for 15-30 minutes a day. Daily movement. Daily eating healthy as you can. Daily recvery plan actions.

That's the point. Create a daily recovery plan that is easy and fun to do and easily do-able. That's the point, because in depression everything is HARD.

Which reminds me, we're going to also talk about the Upward Spiral, a book I found that explains the theory and neural-science perfectly.

GRAPES is a planned path for stopping the downward spiral of depression and starting to slowly increase the positive things in life (rather than try to just 'fix' the problems and negatives).

GRAPES is your way up the spiral out of depression for relief and recovery.

So that's it. It's going and growing and where we want to go each week.

NEW:  I've decided to upload the hand-outs to this blog so everyone else can learn it too.

I have various handouts for mental health recovery.
I have all the handouts in draft for this new depression wellness class I'm talking about above.

I plan to put the class handouts into a booklet for everyone who shows up for the class.

I'll scan those in to my computer as pdfs that I hope I can easily load onto this blog. I may have to email them to myself first or put them in G-Docs first, IDK, but I'll get to that bridge.

Until next week... Take Good Care and eat your Daily GRAPES.

Thanks for reading.

Love & Hugs
Jeanette

E. F. T. for Codependency Recovery

Recovery Tapping for Emotional Freedom

TAP OUT OF FEAR AND INTO CHOICES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi and Welcome back to Recovery Tapping where we "Tap" (an interesting body-mind technique based on acupuncture) to regain our Emotional Freedom.

Tapping on Emotional Problems releases the emotion so it can resolve itself, as this happens we literally watch them fade away. But what happens then?

We have a spontaneous cognitive shift. I'd like to say it's my brilliant use of tapping and that I'm a natural energy healer and it's all my years as a professional helper at work - but I've seen 10 year old kids pick it up quite fast and get just as amazing results. In fact there is this cute little "Tappy" bear that is for sale. There is a hospital in South American for children with cancer where they use Tappy Bear all the time to bring smiles and emotional relief from the stress of what they are going through.

So, all you have to do it learn the basic technique and that's pretty easy, there's even a short-cut. Memorize the 9-14 points to tap on, and aim it at anything and everything you can think of that causes you problems.

Tap on 10 issues a day and what might you look like in a year?

My entire life has changed around for the better and many others have too.

So what about that cognitive shift, what happens next. Well, once we feel calm about our emotional issue and we've tapped on it our minds can then think it through and we might accept more or feel it's time for a change or time for a new decision.

That's why it's so important to know what you want and know what you would prefer to have instead of this problem.

Dr. Pat Carrington developed the "Choices Method" which is basically tapping on your new choices. After tapping on a problem you then tap on a choice statement, such as, I now choose to take better care of myself more and more every day. You tap on that statement and at the next point you alternate it with the negative 'tail-ender' or aspect that may come up such as, "No, I won't" and you tap on that thought, then on the next point you repeat the new choice and on the next point you tap on the negative "I don't know how, no one ever taught me" and so on until you've done about three rounds and you can clearly tap on the new positive choice without any interference.

Now these are just the basics. I just go over them from time to time for the new readers. You can learn all about EFT for free at emofree.com of course, and you can read my blog posts to find out more about how to use it for codependency recovery.

Many of you have sent emails and some even were brave enough to post comments, I try and answer all emails. I want to thank you for taking the risk and talking about some of the pain you are going through in relationships. It's not easy when you're alone and in pain and have been isolating and depressed for so long.

But I want you to know, Number 1 that you are NOT alone, believe me, there are thousands and thousands of us out there, seek and find each other in groups online and off. There are alot of recovery connections and books to read others struggle.

Number 2 You are OK. You are enough. You are Good Enough.

Just say that to yourself and let it sink in for a change.

Just for today you can be OK and each day a little more. I used affirmations for months that were something like this:

"Every day and in every way I'm getting more and more ok. I'm getting used to being ok. It's ok to feel ok."

Using the words "more and more" and "getting used to" really helped me because after a long depression you really aren't used to feeling ok and you don't know that you could get more and more ok in the beginning of your recovery.

In the beginning you may be numb, angry or feeling nothing but pain. That's good! Feeling is a good thing because that is easy to Tap on. It's when you feel flat and not much of anything that it might be hard to even want to try anything.

But even with that there is a Tapping solution, Tap on "Even though I don't feel anything, I love and accept myself." "Even though I don't feel I love and accept myself, I love and accept myself."

So if you are used to feeling your feelings and processing them you already have an edge. You don't try to cover up the bad feelings by forcing positive affirmations on top of them. You can just go ahead and feel your feelings and tap while you are tuned into them and watch the miracles happen.

But I wanted to get back to some of your questions. Yes, I am still currently working on "Dating in Recovery Part III" and it will be put together with Part I, Part II and Part II continued. I'm making it into a nice little booklet that I will give away for free.

A free gift just for looking at my new site I'm launching for my new book "Emotional Freedom Techniques for Codependency Recovery" which is at www.RecoveryTapping.com.

OK, but what if you're going through hell right now?

There's a quote out there I heard years ago, "When you're going through hell, keep going."

Don't stop and stare.

Keep moving.

Or when in 'the hallway' (when one door closes and another one doesn't open yet), go window shopping or decorate.

Keep tapping.

Things will change and shift - they will anyway, nothing stays the same, but if you actively keep moving yourself then it will change better faster. Movement is life. Everything moves all the time. We never stop moving until we're dead. Flat lines are for dead people, so it's ok if you’re going up and down or spiraling around. Just keep moving.

It's OK to not feel OK. It really is all ok.

So what I've done below is taken a combination of several of your emails and put them together into questions you can ask yourself about being codependent and stuck and then a Tapping statement to tap on.

Do you suffer from people pleasing and feeling guilty?

If so, then tap on "Even though I suffer from people pleasing and feeling guilty all the time, I deeply and completely love and accept myself."

Do you feel guilty for things that do not belong to you or are not really your fault or your responsibility?

"Even though I take on other people's guilt, I love and accept myself."
"Even though I feel guilty just for wanting relief from my guilt, I love and accept myself.

That is just what I learned and I am learning new ways now. From now on I choose to feel free of guilt.

Do you put yourself in harm's way by being around alcoholics/addicts/abusive relatives, rage-aholics, and difficult people?

This is a tough one especially if you live with one. But you can start taking yourself out of the firing range. You can begin to put up a boundary between you and them that doesn't let the hooks dig into you as much. You can learn to focus on yourself rather than on other people's problems. Of course, if someone is being abusive to you start working on a plan to take care of and protect yourself. Start talking to someone about it.

"Even though I'm afraid to talk to anyone about my situation, I love and accept myself."

"Even though I've been hurt and feel stuck and am afraid I'll get hurt again, I love and accept myself."

It's amazing how tapping will help your mind shift into healthier thinking and help you take healthier actions. Take baby steps. Take nano steps if you have to. But keep moving.

Do you take disapproval and criticism very hard? Have you been accused of being too sensitive and emotional as if it's a bad thing? Do you feel nervous around certain family members or critical people?

"Even though I am sensitive and emotional, I love and accept myself just the way I am."

"Even though I feel afraid of critical people, I love and accept myself."

If you have been tapping on these issues, it's time to start asking yourself, "Now, what would I rather have instead?" And start tapping on that new choice after each tapping round.

Do you feel guilty when you do something for yourself?

"Even though I feel guilt when I take good care of myself or don't feel I deserve to treat myself better, I love and accept myself."

"I now choose to feel free and innocent and that it's perfectly fine to take good care of myself. From now on I take better care of myself."

When you start setting boundaries, you may feel awkward at first but you know, as an adult, you have the right to change your mind - even without explaining yourself to anyone.

You can stand firm in just saying, "I've changed my mind." period.

You are not obligated to give answers. You can also say, "I prefer....this or that." "I prefer not to get into this discussion."

You are only obligated to take care of your own needs and your business.

If you volunteer for something you can "unvolunteer" yourself by changing your mind. You can say you have something else to do or simply say you've changed your mind, if you need to, you can say something like, "I'm really sorry but it's just not going to work out for me this time."

When you get in panic mode, tap.

Tap while saying a prayer. Tap while saying the Serenity Prayer.

Tap for strength. Tap for guidance.

Tap for peace.

When a guilt trip is thrown at you, you don't have to take it to heart, you can just take it as a sign that the other person has issues and is reacting. They will even get used to it if you stick to your guns. You will begin to care less and less about what other people think about you as you continue tapping on your worst fears and deepest shame.

If you do decide to set a boundary and take care of yourself better instead, and you feel terrible about it later and guilty and shameful, acknowledge it, tap on it while you're feeling it, it will subside.

Don't go running back to people for forgiveness and end up doing more stuff for them for their approval. Tap on that anxiety first and see what happens.

Don't let anyone talk down to you or talk you down or talk you in or out of something. You can just say, "No, thanks. Have a nice day, gotta go." And walk away.

You can wait and do nothing and listen to your intuition.

Take care of yourself first just this afternoon, just for the rest of today, just for today. Just for an hour put your needs first, they deserve your attention too.

Connect with friends who encourage you to take care of yourself, all else will fall into place.

When you feel trapped, ask yourself what two choices do you feel trapped between? Then ask yourself where did you get only those two choices? Ask yourself what other choices might you have.

What other choices might someone else have in your situation? What would a rebel teenager say about your situation? What would a protective social worker or cop say? What would a wise teacher say? What would a fair, impartial judge say?

What does a brave adventurer say? What about a person with lots of tools, what would they say?

All these people are inside of you and more.

What does your wise self say?

What does your recovery part say?

What would your sponsor or coach say?

Just ask. When you put your fears and problems into questions and ask yourself these types of questions, your brain automatically goes searching for an answer. Sometimes it's easier to give support and advice to someone else than to yourself. So what if someone came to you with the problem you are having and they asked you for your help? What would you say or do for them? That is a good insight to what you can give yourself.

"Even though it's easier to help others than it is to help myself, I love and accept myself."

"Even though I'm afraid and I don't know what to do, I love and accept myself."

Give yourself permission to have choices. Allow yourself to hope but not expect.
Remember, regardless of what other people do or say, your life will continue on with little impact of what others choose to do with their life. Can always choose to let it go.

You can always start your day over.

You can Tap your way to Emotional Freedom, one day at a time.
